About Our Blog

The ThinkAboutAble blog is a shared project of Hannah Julien and Alaina Kelley, Speech & Language Pathologists.  This website is a platform to participate in the community of professionals who write about supporting language development and treating language disorders.  In our writing, we explore the ideas that we are thinking about, review related evidence, and share creative solutions to the language-learning obstacles faced by the individuals we serve.

We chose ThinkAboutAble as a title for our website, for its multiple significances:

Thinkaboutable ideas are the ideas that we can work with.  Some ideas are out of our thinkaboutable range until we develop the background knowledge necessary to grasp them.  Some ideas are more thinkaboutable when you have colleagues with whom to converse about them.

Thinkaboutable ideas are the metacognitive and metalinguistic understanding available to individuals with language disorders.  A certain concept may be too hard for an individual to learn until we find a way to make it thinkaboutable for him or her.

Thinkaboutable ideas are the basis of shared understanding between individuals with differing levels of linguistic competence.  When a communication breakdown occurs, everyone is wondering, "Are we thinking about the same thing right now?  How can I be sure that you're thinking what I'm thinking?

Disclaimer: Speech and language therapy is an individualized process. This website is intended to be used by Speech & Language Pathologists, whose specialized training and education better allow them to consider and appropriately deliver therapeutic intervention. Do not implement these ideas without the guidance of a professional Speech & Language Pathologist.
